Reduce Consumption
Environmental Issue: Though reducing consumption is one the most important ways of positively impacting the environment, it tends to be the least popular of the three “R’s” (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).
Environmental Benefit: Obviously, the less we buy and use, the less we have to recycle and reuse. Plain and simple, it is solving the root of the problem by reducing what or how we use. Reducing consumption takes some commitment, and a little work, but it is also cost-efficient and the idea isn’t too complex.
Other Benefit: Saving money! If your company doesn’t buy as much, you are definitely saving money. Some of the costs may go up initially (e.g. by buying more durable goods, you may spend more up front) but you won’t have to purchase as much or as often.
Cost and Complexities: Studies have shown that conserving really pays. For example investing in energy-saving devices is about three times less expensive than renewable energy production. Cost savings are directly realized for consumption reduction where other green efforts often take several years to pay back.
Implementation Plan:
- Reduce energy consumption
- Buy in bulk and buy items with reduced/recycled packaging
- Carpool whenever possible to company events
- Avoid all disposable products as much as possible including paper plates and cups, especially Styrofoam!
