Biking or walking to work is a great way to cheat time. If it takes 20 minutes to drive to work and it only takes 30 minutes to ride your bike to work you get a great 30 minute workout in only 10 minutes. Many of my neighbors ride their bikes to work. One neighbor in particular set a goal of riding to work every day. When it was too windy or icy to ride he walked instead. He rode every day - never missed a day - not even when he was sick. On the days it was pouring rain he managed to get to work without his car.
Even if you can only ride a couple of days a week the impact on the environment can be significant. It is the equivalent of making your car 20-30% more efficient while saving money at the same time. Since transportation is a major contributor to green house gases it is a great place to start making some improvements. Cities across the US are diligently trying to make biking more accessible. You may be surprised to learn what your city has done to create better biking alternatives. Boulder, Colorado has world class biking trails. You can get just about anywhere in the city using its bike trail system.
So back to my neighbor - did I say my neighbor rode his bike to work? I meant school - actually kindergarten. The neighbor I am referring to is only 5 years old. Yep he is only 5! If a five year old, somebody who can barely tell time, hardly even knows the way to school and only weighs 45 pounds can get himself to school every day without a car no matter if it is raining, snowing or sunny what makes it so hard for me? I don't have a good answer. I have a bike, a bike rack at work, a shower at work, a bike lock, bike shorts, bike shoes, a light and every other possible bike gadget you can imagine. So I guess I am going to start riding my bike more since I can't come up with a single good reason not to ride my bike!
